inspired or maybe it’s clarity

I can tell that my jet lag or the intensity of the last week is setting in because today I am more tired than yesterday.  Yesterday I got some work done, but realized about mid day that I’m getting none of my emails from my main email account.  I have 2 and mostly use the one that is not working.  So as I always do when I have technology issues, I take that as a message that I’m given by the good guy upstairs as free pass away from the computer that day.  Computers and such not working means you are given a very strong message you need a break.   Today is another one of those days, which is totally ok.  Just hope that there isn’t anything critical I am missing, which I usually believe is rare by email.

We got about 4 inches of snow overnight which I think made my jet lag set in even a little deeper, how easy it is to feel like curling up on the couch by the fireplace when it’s white out just outside your door.  But aside from that, I have to say for the first time following this January trip to the industry show, I find myself in the most happy place and that is a good thing.

I mentioned when I came back to my blog that I had been simplifying things and I believe that this has much to do with why I feel this good.  I found the show this trip to be exciting and inspiring and the products and business of it all, enjoyable for me personally.  Being in a good place,  I believe,   is much attributed to letting go what needs to be let go of.   Sometimes thats the computer and sometimes it’s external obligation.  It’s hard to say whoa sometimes, but so truly important.    Sometimes you need to take time to detox.   I am trying to teach that to my kids as well.  At this stage, I am the initiator of that so they can reap the benefits and understand how necessary that is.

I have been thinking about something:  how super content and excited I am to organize and play with my photos and my camera, as much as I can find room for in our day to day.  I have been organizing in my studio room, happy to see all the pieces I have collected over time, none of which give me a feeling of guilt for not being used.  (I have been in that place before.)  Finding some very simple ways to document life is what carried me through that.   I have shared some of that here on my blog, but i need to include more as I can.  So stay tuned for that.

I just wanted to get some thoughts down today as I have promised myself that my blog will not be something that I let be a hassle, but an outlet of expression to my friends….you.  So today I am proud to be able to pop in here quickly and do just that.  Thank you for reading and caring.

I have to venture out in this snow (against my wishes of snow travel) and take Laney to get fitted for her orthotics.  She’s grown so fast and so much that she’s having serious shin splint issues with basketball.  Even though her feet I’m sure are still growing at a good rate, we just can’t ignore that pain even if it’s costing outrageous $$$ to put orthotics on a growing kid.   She loves to play basketball and I can’t stand the thought of not doing something about it.

too bad orthotics aren’t something you can hand down to little sisters……(which is my ususal justification for expensive items.)

Back on Monday with winners for the giveaways!!

a little catching up

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

It’s been a busy time with end of school.  There’s been so much that I had to look back through my photos just to remember everything (since my photos pretty much tell me what we’ve been doing.) Here’s a run down:

  • May Day parade
  • Petting Zoo and Family Day
  • beautiful weather, which means a lot of yard work and outdoor play
  • working in the garden
  • Dance rehearsal, Dance Pictures and Dance Recital (that was all the last week of school)
  • lots of graduations and parties
  • School Talent Show
  • lots of new baby kitties
  • Piano Recital
  • Grandparents visiting (both sets which worked out great to see all of the programs the girls were in)
  • End of School Fun Day
  • last day of school

I was working through the photos, trying to catch up on them, and there are a lot. So I just decided to post a couple until I’ve gotten through them ALL.  Then I will post one long catch up.   But here are a couple of photos in the meantime.  I hope to be able to post the rest tomorrow.

—————————————

School ends with Fun Day and a lot of water activities.   The last part of the day is a class tug-o-war.  There are 3 sections of each class so the winner takes on the 3rd class and they always love to finish off the year with this tradition.  This was McKinley’s first year to experience it.  Pretty cute that the Kindergarten classes all thought they won and we really didn’t see any reason to tell them differently.

Delaney’s class was  fun to watch and even more so when I looked back at the pictures I took.  They are the oldest in the school (they will be heading to the middle school next year, which I’m not thrilled about.)  They were totally aware of who won and who didn’t. The photos from her class were pretty funny.  I have a whole series of them that I’ll post with my full post of Fun Day.

School ended and with a blink summer began (insert work from home Mom groan.)  The pool opened, summer softball began, Bible School is in session, swim team started  and I’m am seriously wondering how in the world I am going to get any work done.   It’s a bitter sweet struggle because on one hand I love summer and the girls’ activities and I don’t want to miss them, yet, unfortunately there is work to be done.

Today is my first day of our attempt at a routine summer schedule, the girls with their summer babysitter, which happens to be the daughter of Delaney’s all time favorite teacher.  So I knew I wanted to quickly pop in here and let you know that I’m still alive and haven’t forgotten about posting here.  I’m hoping we’ll get back in to a new groove soon and I will get caught up on my work.

more birthday (cont.)

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

(started this on Monday and I’m just getting back to finish it)

We got quite a round of storms yesterday (actually Sunday) which left 4 inches of rain in about 7 hours (and caused the girls to miss dancing in a scheduled performance.)  But  storms are gone now, but still no sun and lots of flooding.  Marty’s going to have to mow every other day once this all dries out.  We were going to get the garden planted this weekend in our new space.  However, it’s a good thing we didn’t get it in because the entire garden was under a foot of water.

It’s been a few years since Delaney had a friend party for her birthday.  We are always out of town with family for Easter or she chooses something else.  For the time of year, we often take a little family trip around this time too.  But this year, we made plans to be home so she could have a traditional birthday party.  Lots of fun planning it.  She knew just what she wanted from a dinner on the back porch with cloth napkins and frozen drinks with umbrellas to music and a scavenger hunt that ended in the dark.

We almost cancelled because we thought the weather wasn’t going to cooperate, but we actually got the best day possible.  The wind was still (which is pretty uncommon here) and the temperature felt like almost 75 degrees.

The party theme was a backyard luau.  We got the party supplies from Oriental Trading and our local Party Store.   We downloaded some great beach party tunes from ITunes (made a cd for each Delaney and McK.)  We’ve heard a lot of Beach Boys and tropical tunes in the house ever since.

Party invites were very similar to these with sand and a little lei inside.  We didn’t mail them even though you can, but Delaney enjoyed delivering them to each of the girls’ house.

Delaney greeted all the guests as they arrived giving them their lei and flower for their hair.

Go Fish style Card Game with Candy

This game was a HUGE hit.  I didn’t take pictures because I was part of the game, but I did run my video camera the whole time.  Lots of squealing, screaming and cheers.  I got the idea for this from this site which I have used quite a bit in the past for any type of party.

You take 2 decks of cards that are the same no trick decks…You buy enough candy for each person or maybe extras are necessary and put them in a pile… Next you have an adult keep one deck and the other deck is dealt to the kids evenly….Now the adult reads the top card of the deck and the kid with that card gets to pick a candy from the pile and then hides it…It keeps going like this until the whole deck is done…but the second, third and so on people who match the card either get to pick a new candy or pick a candy from someone else guessing they have the candy they want. This way its a fun way for everyone to get a candy.

The key here was to buy unique types of candy that the kids would want to stockpile in their lap.  We used some assorted candy bags with a variety, but then bought gum, tic tacs, and unique candy items.  Surprisingly the funny items were the most coveted.   After the party, Delaney said this was her FAVORITE part.  All the girls wanted this game to never end, they got really giddy with this one.  Will be fun to watch that back on video.

While we prepped the dinner, I think there was some dancing and hula hooping and more…

In the middle of dinner, Marty came to mention we had a few visitors just around the corner of the porch.  2 very LARGE turkeys were about 15 feet away from this photo.  The girls jumped up to see them and a chase ensued.  Imagine 6 girls chasing 2 very large turkeys across the yard with flowers and lei’s in their hair.  Pretty funny (the mental image and the fact that this is the first time we’ve seen turkeys in the yard (add them to the list of wild animals we’ve had in the yard)

After dinner, they opened presents with a couple extra helpers (thank goodness their recent love for skunks wasn’t until AFTER the party.)

Just before dark, the girls paired in teams for the final Scavenger Hunt (Amazing Race style.)  We had 12 numbered envelopes for each team each with a separate task to accomplish.  After each task was completed, they returned to get their next envelope and clue.   We had a basket of tools to  use for  tasks, including notebooks, jump ropes, pencils, gum, tape, flash lights, etc.

Some of the tasks included:  collect a sample of cat hair on a piece of tape, jump rope and blow 10 bubbles with gum, draw a 3D picture of the barn, count the number of windows on the house (by this time it was getting dark and they needed the flashlights.)   Even more squeals and screams in this game.  I nearly wet my pants I was laughing so hard watching this.

The final clue led them to a rose bush with these LOVELY prize glasses.

They didn’t think they were too special, but they did like the party favors which were a beach bag with monogrammed beach towel for each one.   I didn’t get a photo of the towels but they were fun.  Bought the monogram towels off of ebay and the bags from Oriental Trading, which were less than .50 each.

On a different note, I have been waiting and wondering when new stamps are arriving (many of you have asked and I just wasn’t sure.)  BUt, the good news is that stamps are now shipping to stores everywhere.  If you are looking for something special, check with your favorite retailer.  If you don’t have one, watch here for the stamps to go on sale.

and I am thinking in honor of National Scrapbook Day this weekend, it will be fun to give away some brand new products.  So check back for more details to come.

I’m off to do a sun dance…that is or talk to God and pray for a little sunshine to appear and a little less rain.

I’m back…

It will take me a bit to catch up.

Remember the snow storm?  Thank goodness I think we can safely say that will be our last this Spring.  However, my in-laws are snowed in right now and got over 30 inches of snow in one day this past weekend.  ick.

Just wanted to share a few of the pics from the day after the snow stopped.

We were going to go sledding, but because this was a spring snow storm and the ground was so warm from our 85 degree weather we’d been enjoying pre-snow storm, it was almost impossible to get  to our sledding spot.  So instead, the girls spent their time trying to get to the top of the pile of snow from Dad plowing circle drive.

snow-pile-2

Getting everyone to the top was not easy and staying there even harder.  I have to laugh at Delaney because it’s a common thing to see her hat down over her eyes.  I have a pile of snow photos from many years and each one her hat is down over the eyes.  Poor kid.   I suppose maybe a kid that hasn’t always ’seen well’ would be the kid who doesn’t really notice that?

and the big girls decided to lay in the snow and eat it.   They were trying to get me to go inside and get them the snow cone flavoring, but I wouldn’t.  So instead they opted for some pop from the garage (since I wouldn’t let them walk through the house in their snow boots either.)  Honestly I find eating the snow quite unappealing, but I decided I would let them figure that out and yet knowing Delaney, she would think it was the best thing ever.

snow-2-laney-kate1

A few minutes later, they were joined by the dogs and i couldn’t resist hollering at Delaney to be careful to make sure she gets the right pile of slush and not the one that the dogs left behind.   Marty overheard and heard the girls screaming because the dogs came to join them.   We both laughed pretty hard and the girls did NOT find any humor in our laughing one bit.

This photo still cracks me up.

more catching up to come….including Delaney’s birthday, her party and Easter.

it arrived

1 week in to Spring, after 5 days of 80 degree temps.  The bonus for the kids was even a snow day.  Last night I told Marty that school had better NOT be cancelled because I had 100 things to do that needed a quiet kids free house.  Well, 10:00 last night, school cancelled.  We woke up this morning and now snow, which made me like the fact that school was cancelled even more.  But  100% chance it was coming.  Had I been a teacher (as I was 10 years ago) I would have been jumping for joy at the idea of a snow day.  Fast foward 10 years and well, today I wasn’t excited.

photo-2

But you have to admit, being snowed in for the weekend at the end of March carries a little bit of uniqueness to it, so we’ll just enjoy the fact that for the first time all winter we might just break out those new snowpants, the end of March.  This is the midwest, so we have come to expect abnormal as normal.

So it’s time to do some baking don’t you think and watch a little March Madness.  Have a great weekend.

One last whine I’m hoping:

It’s nearing the end of March and we’ve had the most gorgeous weather for February and March I can remember.  While I’m so thankful, it’s almost been harder to keep having winter weather sneak back in after we’ve had temperatures nearing 89 degrees.  But…looks like we need to take this winter a little more as tonight we’re in a winter storm warning going in to the weekend.   So, we’ll just put the thoughts of flower beds and spring planting and the tidbits of spring (like our pear tree which is in full bloom) aside while we are reminded that this is Kansas and anything goes for weather.   I have new snowpants for the girls that I got for the holidays and then decided to hold on to them until it snowed.  Well, we haven’t had ONE snow that was right for sledding.  So I suppose we’ll be getting that here at the end of March.  While we need the moisture, we don’t need the frost.  It will not be nice to our fruit trees.  I guess the wheat (which is all around us) is far enough along to be ok.

So just a little more whining from me about this weather.  I think surely soon, this will pass.

I’ve gotten several emails from this one,  our  new emailer in our house.  One of the funniest was the day she came running upstairs to show me her report card, sounding like a herd of elephants running through the house.   Afterwards she was just BEAMING with pride in herself and went to her room.  I received this email from her only seconds later.

(btw, I’m trying HARD not to say much to her about her spelling.  We discovered earlier this year, she has a vision issue called Strabismus and she’s been in vision therapy for 9 months now.  It’s truly been a blessing for her in many ways, but her spelling is one of the casualties.  She’s going to have a lot of catching up to do as far as that goes since her eyes haven’t been seeing words correctly all her life.  So I bite my tongue and we just do as much reading as she loves to do.)  AND I want her emails to be fun for her.

and a few more she sent me while she was on spring break.  Turns out she has decided it’s easier to email me then come upstairs to my office.

Gave her a new book to read over spring break and this followed.

Both of the girls were hanging out in Delaney’s room and so I got an email then from McKinley.  Must have been a special day because they don’t often hang out in big sister’s bedroom like that.

and then (she calls her sister, Kissy, it’s a combination of Kinley and Sissy) this one came later on that day.,

Last Friday we hit 86 degrees, almost unheard of for March Kansas weather.  However, we are back down in to the teens this week with below zero wind chills.  So I’m going to post these pictures today and hope that this is our last bit of cold weather and then we can get back out in the yard and start our spring activities.

These pictures were from last December (ok, actually 2007) when we had a major ice storm and lost power for 3 days (and we were the lucky ones.)  Most lost power for almost a week.  Just a couple of photos I liked when browsing my photos.

hope spring comes SOON…

blog-header-3

{Life in Pictures}  photo taken on July 4th 2008 picnic, edited in IPhoto antique and edge blur effect

I came upstairs to my office to my inbox and I had something I can say that I have never had  in my inbox.  It was an email from Delaney wishing me a happy birthday (she started emailing with her own email yesterday.)

I found it so unusual that she didn’t say anything before school as it was so unlike her.  I actually worried a little for her because I “thought” she would remember sometime later and then feel bad.  Well, it was SO unlike her that I should have known there was more to the story.   I even thought she seemed overly trying not to look at me as if she would for sure ruin her surprise email.  She had emailed me happy birthday and in true Delaney fashion she didn’t want to spoil her email with any precursor.

birthday-email-1

A few minutes later Marty forwarded me an email that he apparently also got from Delaney.  Earlier in the morning I thought she was unusually quiet in her room and so I sent Marty in to get her moving.  Well it turns out, she was emailing (we have an older household laptop that she likes to sneak in to her room.)  She decided Dad might need a reminder too.  So she sent him this:

So I’m happy to say that the day started out with a smile and a reminder of why I am so lucky.  There isn’t much more that I need  (except perhaps dinner at my favorite mexican restaurant tonight.)

mck-dance-cu

Edited:  IPhoto with a edge vingnette

Working through my photo organization and ongoing projects a LOT lately.  I probably sound like a broken record about how happy that makes me.  I think it stems from years of “lack of.”   It’s that link to those days gone by that is such a treat for me.  So just purely enjoying that right now, which leads me to the next thing.  I have so many photos that I am starting something new here on my blog.    Every weekday (barring grave illness)  I’ll be posting a photo from our crazy lives.  Sometimes I will have nothing else to share, but the photo of the day.

As I have been working through these projects I have found so many photos that I love and have never shared (as you can imagine) that I thought it would be a great thing to share with you.   I will add photo edits, if there were any.   Sometimes I will have a story with them and others not.   I’m looking forward to this, as I have found to be the case with all of these photo projects I have been tackling lately.  More to follow on that subject.

Browsing 100’s of photos lately has reminded me of something I think is so true.  Often I have photos that I have taken at a specific time and certain ones become my favorite for that day or week.  However, when I come back to the photos 6 months or a year later, even longer, other photos often become ones that I love just as much and at times more.   I think we all have that guilt of wishing certain photos we took were “better” at the time, but I almost always find myself MORE than happy with the photos I took after time passes.

This photo above was one of those situations.  I had wanted this close up of McK to include a smile instead of this serious kid that I often get in front of the camera.  Well, today I love this photo so much more than I did last May when I took it.  This is really very her,  and I am so glad to have it.

If…you have not been in your photos from this past year even prior to that, try spending a little time there.   Maybe your photos are on the computer and you have opened those files in a long time.  Maybe you have printed them and they are still where they landed when you got them.     I am finding so much joy in the time I am spending on this process and learning so much about what I have been missing.

almost spring….maybe?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

We keep thinking that just maybe spring is getting near and yet we know it can change 60 degrees in 24 hours, so we’re not getting too excited.  But we have already hit 75 degrees and the forecast for today is going to be close to that.  I need to my work done so we can be outside for sure.

This past weekend it wasn’t that warm, but the girls have in their heads that if one day is as warm as 75 that everyday must be that warm.  So they think their flip flops and their shorts are perfectly acceptable choices.  It’s this crazy midwest early spring weather that makes it so hard to predict.

I think it was barely upper 40’s and they spent over 8 hours together outside jumping rope and playing.  I should rephrase the “together” part.  Sometimes they were together and many times they were just both in the same location outside, but definitely not together.   I think after so many hours of die hard play, they were getting a little bored with each other and then it was time to make it interesting with a little everyday sisterly annoyance.

McK picked herself out a new jump rope with some Christmas money she’s been saving and finally just had to spend it (thanks Zoe!)  That and a rubber snake and tree frog (over a special glittered barbie) if you can believe.  This kid will choose creepy rubber insects any day over girlie stuff, (go figure.)

It seems WE (being all the kids in this house) have been SUPER obsessed with jumping rope lately.  Started at school with our ‘great’ PE teacher we have (who sometimes even will read a blog or 2) who brought in a jump rope group to perform for the kids during their jump rope unit.

I think they made 100’s of trips up and down the drive with and without the jump rope and even the basketball too (another favorite right now.)   I’d say we’re a little obsessed when they are still jumping on the porch with the lights on, after dark because I won’t let them jump in the house.  I know mean mom.  We don’t do basketball in the house either.   Wouldn’t you think an entire day of jumping would be enough?

Oh, spring it just can’t come quick enough here.  I get this way every Winter and the idea of spring, being outdoors, the flip flops and capris, skirts and spring clothes drive me wildly crazy ready for it to get here.  Just a few minutes ago I was having a day dream aloud to Marty about Spring or Summer meals even, cantaloupe and BLT sandwiches, corn on the cob and fresh garden produce.   Sigh….

We’re probably going to get blasted in a couple weeks with a big blizzard…lol.

A few pictures I took this weekend, trying out a “new to me” lens I got from Karen Russell that she didn’t need in her bag and I did.  It was a great swap.  Fun lens too, 200  2.8 and I think it’s going to work really nice outside and for some sports things I want to shoot.

For all these pictures I was either sitting on our front steps or in the driveway.  We have a lot of space out here and I like having a lens that will go the distance even when I’m feeling like NOT going the distance.  I shoot with a Canon 40 D, so I have a crop factor on top of that 200.

I’ve had several questions lately about photo editing and software that I use, etc.   These pictures below were mildly edited in IPhoto which comes on a Mac and is super fast and easy, which is needed for my schedule.  But occasionally I will post process a photo in Photoshop and add actions.  I probably do this with less than 5% of my photos.  It’s just not something I have time to do to the 100’s of photos I take, actually 1000’s.  So when I feel like adding a little something more, I might do that.  The photos below have just a couple of actions.  Mostly edge burning which gives them a little darker edge.  That’s probably my favorite style of action.  As for color, I’m pretty traditional when it comes to the colors I want the photo to be and so I don’t spend time adding actions to accomplish that very often.  Sometimes occasionally for a special photo for gifts or for printing for our house, but my everyday scrapbook photos.

More on the photography topic later this week.  So if you have something you have been curious about, leave it in the comments here as I have a bunch of them to answer.

I have all of my photos archived at Photoworks which works really well to share and send, etc.  So I’m going to try to embed a link to the full folder of images.  These are photos with little to no photo editing which the majority of my photos are.  So you can see them and compare to the few I have here with a few actions etc.   Let me know if this link doesn’t work for some reason.

Really hoping to get lots done today so I can enjoy this beautiful weather we’re going to have….  has spring come to you yet???
