Life in Pictures: photo of the day

mck-dance-cu

Edited:  IPhoto with a edge vingnette

Working through my photo organization and ongoing projects a LOT lately.  I probably sound like a broken record about how happy that makes me.  I think it stems from years of “lack of.”   It’s that link to those days gone by that is such a treat for me.  So just purely enjoying that right now, which leads me to the next thing.  I have so many photos that I am starting something new here on my blog.    Every weekday (barring grave illness)  I’ll be posting a photo from our crazy lives.  Sometimes I will have nothing else to share, but the photo of the day.

As I have been working through these projects I have found so many photos that I love and have never shared (as you can imagine) that I thought it would be a great thing to share with you.   I will add photo edits, if there were any.   Sometimes I will have a story with them and others not.   I’m looking forward to this, as I have found to be the case with all of these photo projects I have been tackling lately.  More to follow on that subject.

Browsing 100’s of photos lately has reminded me of something I think is so true.  Often I have photos that I have taken at a specific time and certain ones become my favorite for that day or week.  However, when I come back to the photos 6 months or a year later, even longer, other photos often become ones that I love just as much and at times more.   I think we all have that guilt of wishing certain photos we took were “better” at the time, but I almost always find myself MORE than happy with the photos I took after time passes.

This photo above was one of those situations.  I had wanted this close up of McK to include a smile instead of this serious kid that I often get in front of the camera.  Well, today I love this photo so much more than I did last May when I took it.  This is really very her,  and I am so glad to have it.

If…you have not been in your photos from this past year even prior to that, try spending a little time there.   Maybe your photos are on the computer and you have opened those files in a long time.  Maybe you have printed them and they are still where they landed when you got them.     I am finding so much joy in the time I am spending on this process and learning so much about what I have been missing.

Q & A and a little one with pink eye

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

(These pictures aren’t from today, but this is my kid who really doesn’t like sweets, which seems crazy, but for some reason will eat the heck out of brownies and brownie mix.   Want to make her smile, just let her make a box of brownies and leave plenty in the bowl for her to enjoy while they are baking.  That’s just what we did today to make being housebound for the weekend a little better.)

I’m sitting here with one very “mean” looking 6 year old with pink eye.  Started in one eye and moved to the other.  Her dad (you know Dad’s are always a little more sensitive to their kids scrapes and scratches) said she sure looks pretty tough, but I don’t think it’s affected her energy level at all.  He found her jumping from one side of the couch to the other earlier today and decided maybe not to feel too sorry for her after all.   No, if one is to be home from school sick, I think having pink eye might just be the way to go, since for her there is no itch or discomfort really.  So we’ll take this any day over the stomach flu, something big sister had a few weeks back.

So we made a little trip to the nickel & dime movie rental store.  500 channels on our dish doesn’t hold a candle compared to renting some low budget cheap kids cartoons and movies.  BUT, someone is more than happy thinking she has the whole set of movies and the dvd player all to herself.  Actually made another trip for a second round of movies when we knew this was going to be a bit longer than we thought.  She’s a pretty happy camper though.

So I’m catching up on my photo storage binders.  Also getting close to ordering all of my 2008 pictures on CD from Photoworks.  Trying to decide if I’m going to wait for  a special or just order it and have it done. Last year there was a special for the entire year worth of photos for $14.95 and free shipping.   So I ordered 2, one to keep here and use and one for keeping off site.  It was 18 DVD’s for each set.   Pretty good deal for me, not for Photoworks.  However, they get plenty of my financial support so I think it evens out.

I am going to take some photos this week of my storage binders.  I’m waiting on some more photo sleeves from Print File for my FAVORITES binder in 5×7.    I can’t believe I started this over 10 years ago and then stopped when things got crazy I guess.  If only I had stuck with it then, I wouldn’t have all this catching up to do.

I wanted to answer several questions you have been leaving me.  I promise to do better at that as I am going to be making more time for my blog.     So if you have more questions, please don’t hesistate to ask them and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Just wondering what lens you traded to Karen Russell for the 200 mm prime? What is your lens set-up? I am
ordering the 135 mm 2.0 prime from Canon this spring and can’t wait! Also, when will your new products reach stores?

I actually bought Karen’s lens from her and traded her a little cash.  She already had a 70-200 2.8, so having a 200  2.8 was a little redundant for her.   She and I were swapping lens stories of lessons learned on buying one we really wish we hadn’t, etc.  I have a 100mm 2.8 that I bought not having any idea what I was buying back before I grew a little better understanding of lens.  Turns out after a little research and a lot of learning about what lens’ I actually had, that I LOVE this lens.

I use my 100 mm 2.8 for indoor sports mostly and some outdoor playing in the yard and close range sports.  I have my eye on a few serious lens’ for outdoor sports that I will be waiting on for a while, dreaming about.  So I got Karen’s 200 2.8 lens that I am using for outdoor sports and photos outside at our farm.

When I was researching lens’ I read 100’s of testimonials for lens and that’s where I learned the most of what people like and don’t like.  I finally think I am starting to have an understanding.   My husband bought me the 70-200 2.8 for Christmas and I decided to return it.  For the price and the size, I decided that I didn’t think it was the one I wanted.  Just a personal choice.  I took me about 3 weeks of intense reading to figure that out, but what I learned in the process was invaluable.

I will be totally honest and tell you that while I am finally figuring out the technical side of photography, I honestly know very little.  I am truly a trial and error kind of photographer.  I learn by lots of mistakes and always just follow my eye.   My eye tells me what I like and don’t like and honestly I can NEVER “think” a shot.  That’s why I have always shot in AUTO and I’m just starting to change that a little and very slowly.

I will see things that I know I like or don’t like and then I have to spend the time figuring out\how to achieve it.

What I learned about lens’ I learned honestly in the past few months.  Here’s what I use:

My camera is a Canon 40D.  I have had this camera a little over a year.   While a good camera makes a nice  difference in your photos, I shot with a point and shoot for years and most people were surprised.  It wasn’t until I got a lot smarter that I realized the camera just couldn’t do what I wanted it to do.  But as I said, I’m slow to figure it out, I promise.

LENS I have:

  • I have a 50mm 1.8 that I use 90% of the time on my camera.  This is somewhere around $80.  There is a 1.4 and a 1.2 and both are better than the 1.8 I have.  I bought my 1.8 right after buying my camera and so at the time I was trying to save $$$$$.  I have considered upgrading to the either one of these (part of my research I was doing lately)  but I have decided to spend my dollars on something that is a bit different since I do have the 1.8.  I would rather have something else first.  So the next lens on my wish list is this one.  There are times when shooting with my 50mm that I can’t fit everything in the image that I want (like shooting a group of kids in a classroom) so that’s why I’m looking at changing that up a bit with a 24mm since I already own the one 50mm.  Since I have a camera with a crop factor, my 50 mm lens is a little too much for some indoor photos (meaning I can’t get everything I want in to some photos.)  However right now, I’m ok with the camera body I own and so I’d rather spend my money on nice lenses then another camera body.
  • 100 mm 2.8   I love this lens for indoor sports like gymnastics and basketball or volleyball.  Sometimes I will also shoot indoor sports with my 50 mm too, but the 100mm allows me to not have to be as close to the action
  • 200 mm 2.8   This is the lens I bought used from Karen.  I used this for the outdoor photos from my last post.    Some people prefer a zoom lens and some prefer prime lens’.   One thing I learned through reading (mostly testimonials of people who own these lenses)   is this.  A zoom lens will give you the ability to change your focal length easily without moving yourself.  However, to do so, you often have a much bigger lens to handle.   The 70-200 lens I got and returned at Christmas, was HUGE and yet only offered a length of 200mm which I realized I would often be using it at.  If I’m shooting outdoors around the yard or at softball games, I would likely have it at 200 a lot.  (Everyone is different though and for me this is just a personal choice that I have just recently started to figure out.)  The 200 mm 2.8 fixed is a much smaller lens and lighter.  It also has (IMO and based on the reviews I read here) is a little sharper at 200mm.  So why carry around a massive lens which is a little less sharp for me at 200 where I will be using it at the most.   It wasn’t until I actually had the 70-200 in my hands and tried it on the camera that I just couldn’t imagine using that on an everyday basis outdoors with the kids, something I do a lot.  Just not realistic for me.  The 200 2.8 is basically the same, although it’s fixed, but is  smaller and much more suitable for everyday use for me.   So I’m looking forward to using this lens a lot more especially with spring and summer just around the corner.
  • 28-135 kit lens (rarely use it, but when I’m indoors and need to fit more in my frame like this photo below (Delaney’s class Christmas St. Lucia program)

Maridette

Hi there,

Love your photos. I too am learning so much in photography. What camera and lens did you use for most of your pictures. Also, did you edit any photos and what software did you use? My goal is to take pictures that looks like yours and Karen Russell’s.

Thank you,
Maridette

Maridette,

My camera and lenses are listed earlier in this post.   I don’t have near the photography knowledge and technical skills that Karen does and I started taking her photography class (embarassed to say I am not as far along with it as I want to be and hope to finish her class because I could really benefit from more understanding of what it is that I’m doing.

I really don’t care to “edit” my photos a whole lot after shooting only because I take so many photos and I would much rather spend time printing and playing with my photos “out of the computer” than editing them “in the computer.”   I do get mad at myself (a little) wishing that I were faster editing and post processing so I could spend a little more time on it.  But almost every time I do a little post processing I get really irked at myself and stop.

I will take a little time in IPhoto to sharpen and lighten photos that need it from my favorites.   Then if I do any extra post processing it will be in Photoshop and I will add 1-2 actions and for edge burning.   If I’m printing photos for our house or playing with my favorites from the year, I might go a little further with a few more actions on them.

I have heard that Lightroom is a wonderful time saver for post processing.  I downloaded the trial version of the software and then didn’t get through the tutorial before my time ran out.  I plan to buy the software in full sometime this year though.   I think it would be a good thing from what I’ve heard from so many.

Thanks for your kind words about my photos.  I really believe that taking good photos is largely improved by shooting a LOT and knowing what you like in your photos.   I think I have been looking through a camera all my life in theory.  I love to isolate things visually to just enjoy a tiny segment (blocking out the rest.)  Photography does that for me by visually letting me capture only what I want to see.

I posted in the entry below, wrong one sorry…
I would love to see your album of favorites. I am wanting to do something similar but have yet to start anything since I struggle to keep up with my family/kid’s albums. I would like to see how you display them and/or any ideas for this album.
Thanks!

Jennifer, my favorites album is only an album of PHOTO FAVORITES.  I wasn’t sure if you realized that or not.  I have a variety of different size pictures in this album.  There are no rules to date, year etc.  Just my favorites altogether in one place.   I started this idea about 8 years ago, much like everything else in my life.  I started, got caught up in having little kids.  I am now back catching up on this, moving forward as life happens and then when I can trying to work backwards.  I am waiting on a few more photo sleeves I ordered, but will take a photo of this for you when I have added my latest pieces to this.

Patty Chiszar

Danelle, I lived in Leavenworth, Kansas for 16 years and never saw 70 in February. Enjoy the day. Pattie

Hey Pattie,

Can you believe it got to almost 80 degrees Thursday.  I raked the yard, cleaned out the sand box, hauled weeds and was just about to prune my flower beds, but decided to wait.  This weekend the wind chill was 15 below zero.  That’s almost 100 degree temperature swing for what your body feels.   By Tuesday we are supposed to be reaching the 70’s again.  Just insane weather for February in Kansas.  I am so itching for spring with all this warm weather yet I would be anything that will probably have a blizzard in March.  I hope not as the wheat all around our house is already too far along with all this warm weather.  So keep your fingers crossed we have an early full spring.

Jessica

Wow! That’s a lot of photos all at once.

I must say that I was one of those people you described. I take thousands of photos a year and print some out to put in frames, give to other people, or use in projects (mostly to give to the kids’ Grandmothers). I like to scrapbook, but just didn’t have enough time. I was really behind - still working on my oldest son’s baby book (60 pages and 7 months in) and he’s 4 1/2! I also just couldn’t print them out and put them in albums … it felt like admitting defeat.
Believe it or not, discovering your blog and reading about your photobooks rather set me free. I took courage and decided it wasn’t cheating to create photobooks. So, I created one for every year before we had kids (not too many photos) and then a family one for every year up to 2007. I still plan to paper scrapbook baby books for each of the three kids and do layouts for the pictures I want to … but I’m caught up!!!

Hi Jessica,

I’m so glad you took the chance and made those books and that you love them so much too.  I have never loved anything as much and been so freed by any projects before.  I am scrapbooking more today than I ever have and it just keeps getting better and better with each piece of the process I am figuring out (it’s constantly a work in progress for sure.  I am working on a series of travel books of family trips we’ve taken now.  I can’t wait to have them all done.

Also, I haven’t ever scrapbooked my daughter’s NICU photos, she was 3 months pre-mature.  It was a very long road for us and quite a fog as well.  I have just kept everything together knowing one day I would know just what I wanted to do.  I recently decided to try it a different way that I had always thought i would.  Anxious to see how this turns out, but I’m finally read to tackle this.    I really think photo books offer a way to accomplish things at a different speed that you would scrapbooking in a traditional style.   I personally love both and so I have learned to have the process match the best end result for me.

CHARLOTTE Says:
JUST FOUND THIS WEBSITE. TOTALLY LOVE THE FAMILY PHOTO JOURNAL. PLEASE, PLEASE SEND DETAILS AND MATERIALS USED. WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THIS. GREAT IDEA.

Here’s a link to where you can buy the kit for the Family Photo Journal.  You can see more photos of this here,   This is one of the more traditional scrapbook projects I am working on.  Traditional in that I print the photos and add everything to complete the project in person.  I spend one night a month with friends and we all bring our photos to work on from the previous month.  I love being with friends as much as I love trying to stay current on this project.  We’re not always on target for being caught up, but I’m a heck of a lot closer than I would be otherwise.  AND I look forward to this night each month.

    Christina

I’ve been keeping myself quiet for a long time, just reading your blog. But now I have to say something: Please, pretty please publish a photography book. You are my child photography idol. I try to do what you do, but could use more help along the way. Love you, love your products, love your photography. Rock on!

Christina, you are very nice and actually gave me quite the laugh.   I don’t know that I could ever do a photography book, but I will continue to share what I have learned here on my blog.  I am far from someone with enough knowledge for a book, but I sure do appreciate you being so kind.  I am truly a photo addict and will probably always be shooting photos like crazy.  So that’s one thing I know will never change.   I do enjoy sharing and am planning to spend a lot more time on my blog.  So don’t be a stranger because if I don’t hear from you, I don’t know what you like.  So thanks!     I know there are a lot more of you here like Christina so make yourself at home…and say something!!  lol

Edited to ADD:  Karen’s Online Photographer’s Workshop is just the BEST thing if you are wanting to learn more about photography.  I am started this class (got overwhelmed with life and need to finish the class in a BAD way.)  I know if anyone can turn me in to a technical photographer, it’s Karen’s simplified way of explaining it.   I just noticed she is holding registration Monday for the next 2 sessions here.

almost spring….maybe?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

We keep thinking that just maybe spring is getting near and yet we know it can change 60 degrees in 24 hours, so we’re not getting too excited.  But we have already hit 75 degrees and the forecast for today is going to be close to that.  I need to my work done so we can be outside for sure.

This past weekend it wasn’t that warm, but the girls have in their heads that if one day is as warm as 75 that everyday must be that warm.  So they think their flip flops and their shorts are perfectly acceptable choices.  It’s this crazy midwest early spring weather that makes it so hard to predict.

I think it was barely upper 40’s and they spent over 8 hours together outside jumping rope and playing.  I should rephrase the “together” part.  Sometimes they were together and many times they were just both in the same location outside, but definitely not together.   I think after so many hours of die hard play, they were getting a little bored with each other and then it was time to make it interesting with a little everyday sisterly annoyance.

McK picked herself out a new jump rope with some Christmas money she’s been saving and finally just had to spend it (thanks Zoe!)  That and a rubber snake and tree frog (over a special glittered barbie) if you can believe.  This kid will choose creepy rubber insects any day over girlie stuff, (go figure.)

It seems WE (being all the kids in this house) have been SUPER obsessed with jumping rope lately.  Started at school with our ‘great’ PE teacher we have (who sometimes even will read a blog or 2) who brought in a jump rope group to perform for the kids during their jump rope unit.

I think they made 100’s of trips up and down the drive with and without the jump rope and even the basketball too (another favorite right now.)   I’d say we’re a little obsessed when they are still jumping on the porch with the lights on, after dark because I won’t let them jump in the house.  I know mean mom.  We don’t do basketball in the house either.   Wouldn’t you think an entire day of jumping would be enough?

Oh, spring it just can’t come quick enough here.  I get this way every Winter and the idea of spring, being outdoors, the flip flops and capris, skirts and spring clothes drive me wildly crazy ready for it to get here.  Just a few minutes ago I was having a day dream aloud to Marty about Spring or Summer meals even, cantaloupe and BLT sandwiches, corn on the cob and fresh garden produce.   Sigh….

We’re probably going to get blasted in a couple weeks with a big blizzard…lol.

A few pictures I took this weekend, trying out a “new to me” lens I got from Karen Russell that she didn’t need in her bag and I did.  It was a great swap.  Fun lens too, 200  2.8 and I think it’s going to work really nice outside and for some sports things I want to shoot.

For all these pictures I was either sitting on our front steps or in the driveway.  We have a lot of space out here and I like having a lens that will go the distance even when I’m feeling like NOT going the distance.  I shoot with a Canon 40 D, so I have a crop factor on top of that 200.

I’ve had several questions lately about photo editing and software that I use, etc.   These pictures below were mildly edited in IPhoto which comes on a Mac and is super fast and easy, which is needed for my schedule.  But occasionally I will post process a photo in Photoshop and add actions.  I probably do this with less than 5% of my photos.  It’s just not something I have time to do to the 100’s of photos I take, actually 1000’s.  So when I feel like adding a little something more, I might do that.  The photos below have just a couple of actions.  Mostly edge burning which gives them a little darker edge.  That’s probably my favorite style of action.  As for color, I’m pretty traditional when it comes to the colors I want the photo to be and so I don’t spend time adding actions to accomplish that very often.  Sometimes occasionally for a special photo for gifts or for printing for our house, but my everyday scrapbook photos.

More on the photography topic later this week.  So if you have something you have been curious about, leave it in the comments here as I have a bunch of them to answer.

I have all of my photos archived at Photoworks which works really well to share and send, etc.  So I’m going to try to embed a link to the full folder of images.  These are photos with little to no photo editing which the majority of my photos are.  So you can see them and compare to the few I have here with a few actions etc.   Let me know if this link doesn’t work for some reason.

Really hoping to get lots done today so I can enjoy this beautiful weather we’re going to have….  has spring come to you yet???

a beautiful day….

  • It’s going to be in the 70’s today…  love that in the middle of February.
  • McKinley asked her Daddy to eat at school today.  She left this morning with a BIG smile.  Big sister overheard and told Dad just make sure NOT to talk to the super cool 4th grader.
  • watched the latest on the Bachelor last night and bummed that Jason sent home Jillian.  Oh, the drama.   Also followed an online chat  with Deanna.   Pretty interesting.  Looks like ABC is trying to build some major hype around the finale.  Interested to see how it all turns out, but I don’t think I have favorites like most season’s.
  • I was a student in 2007 of Stacy’s Library of Memories class at Big Picture Scrapbooking.  Revisiting the class again as an alumni right now, which will be a good thing.   My stack of photos from last year is almost completely in to my photo binders.   I’ve worked a little each day to make some progress.   Love how good it feels.   (will have to take a photo of the binders I use, but this is the rest of the process)   About 5 years ago I started an album of favorite photos, in a mixture of sizes.  Printed some of my last couple year favorites in 5×7 that I’m going to add in with my others.  Really like just having lifetime favorites in one place.

  • Helped a bunch of excited Kindergartners on Valentine’s Day.  Nothing quite as adorable as little K’s on a party day.  Such adorable kiddos and big smiles.   Someone even got a surprise letter in her Valentine’s from her big sister.   So at least on Valentine’s Day, she is willing to show some love for her little sis. ;)
Loved all the artwork in the room too so it made it’s way on to my camera.

Many things on the “TO DO” list today, but I am going to make sure to step outside if even for just a little bit to enjoy the sun.
Hope you have some sunshine in your little corner of the world too.

Remember those prints?

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

They arrived.  13 inches of pure photo goodness, ready to nag at me for a home.  As if I need something more to add to my list of projects.

Even though the stack is huge, I am glad to have them.  I decided a while back, when I started to develop a system that was right for documenting  our lives (which before wasn’t much honestly,) one of my issues was that the majority of my photos lived deep in the computer.   Big surprise? No.

The problem was that I was addicted to taking photos, and that’s where it stopped.  Kind of like when you are addicted to a new fun outfit everyday and not addicted to doing the laundry?  Yeah, a little problem arises.

So I started buying bulk print packages, which allowed me to get prints for 9 cents  and because the print packages are only good for a specific amount of time, it forced me to print more.

I can say I have officially printed.  I believe it works by forcing me to get it done. Sometimes I need that.  Often I need that.

Anyone that knows me, knows how much I love Photoworks and for the first time I tried their matte photos and added the white edge too.  I really like the results.    Will use that again.

Have you printed photos lately?   Do you have a system that allows you the opportunity to print regularly so you can enjoy your photos?   I wish I had started my system when the girls were babies.   But when I start to get frustrated about that, I just try to keep in mind that they are in elementary school, so it’s better than what it could be.   I just started at present and worked forward trying to stay current and then I can work backwards from there.

I use my Epson Picture Mate to print everyday photos during the month, to use in my Family Photo Journal because it is truly the easiest and it’s instant photo gratification with amazing results.   Then I also order prints online using my bulk prints about once a year for the things I want to have lots of photos of and don’t want to print by hand.   Things such as birthdays, holidays, school activities, vacations, etc and these go in to Photo Albums with photo sleeves.

The majority of people I meet keep most of their photos in the computer and never print.  I know the feeling.  I was just like that.  They might use a few in the computer, email a few, and give to grandparents for Christmas, but that’s about as far as it goes.

Been there, done that.  I was overwhelmed and intimidated and yet even a photo addict.  Once I made the change to digital, the only printing I did was the few photos I printed at home that were meant for a specific scrapbook project.   You know what that meant?  I printed less and less because I was scrapbooking less and less because I was numb and really didn’t know where to begin and so the cycle continued.  I got overwhelmed with all the steps in the process and it really started eating at me.   So then I stopped buying scrapbook products because they reminded me of what I wasn’t doing.

I knew I had to find a way, a way to change.

AND that is when I first made the decision to really get what I wanted out of my time and let go of all the RULES that I had somehow picked up along the way.   I couldn’t be happier with the fact that I enjoy my photos and my kids and family enjoy them too.  What better way to let your kids know that you love them and love your life, but with pictures showing them!

and you know what,  having my photos around me and not in my computer makes me a better mom, wife, woman and person because it makes me happy.    AND that is a good thing because I think there are days I need a little extra help.

What works for you?   Have you found something that works?

I’d love to hear what your challenges are in regards to your photos or what successes you’ve had.

How has it changed you?  What do you want to change?

going to try to check in from the show some.  Ok, started this post earlier because i am actually here now.  Too funny.

If you haven’t been to the Creative Cafe blog, you might want to check that out.  Lots of inspiration there and a party with lots of give aways.

This image above is another of the new ART WAREHOUSE collections releasing at CHA.  It’s an extension to the original Radiance Collection which includes lots of bling.

Be sure to get your name in the comments below for the Sports Giveaway.  Refer a friend to the blog here and I’ll enter your name twice.  Just have the friend include your email address.

If you are a retailer coming to the CI party tomorrow night, we’ll be doing a Radiance Mini book (images won’t seem to load right now, but I’ll try again tomorrow.)  Be sure to get time to make one if you are coming to the party.  Also, stay tuned for a chance to win this project, for those of you not coming to the show.  I always like to give away a few show projects to you at home, so you aren’t left out.  I will have 2 of these to give, so check back for more details on that to come.

All the inspiration of the show and new product makes me think about my photos, which leads to my need to print LOTS of photos.  So  I am placing a BIG order of photos when I get back because I have a bunch of credits that expire….and I don’t want that to happen.

Why don’t you join me in a challenge to get your photos printed.  It is such a good feeling and one of my favorite things to do.  Let me know if you do, where you print, how often, etc, whatever details you feel like sharing…and how it felt.

more to come

Danelle

Documenting our World in Pictures: what works for me

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

I have promised several people I would post this, finally getting to it.

Part 1:  What Works for Me

It’s taken me several years to get to a place where I feel that I am documenting our life as it happens.  I will be honest in saying that I really wondered if I would ever be able to do that because I take SO MANY photos. I can easily take 2000 photos in one month depending on what’s going on and yet there are other months (usually January) where  I might take less and that’s ok.  I think that’s part of trying to keep a balance.

With so many photos in the year, you’d think there might be a lot of those that aren’t important or are duplicates.  Sometimes that’s the case, but I usually find that at least 70% of them I find show something important to me at least.

So how and what do I do with so many photos, in a way that I can digest and keep up with?

The truth is that I started out with high aspirations of being on top of my scrapbooking and photo storage and I did well until I think Delaney turned 2 and from there it all went downhill real fast.  I don’t even have any great excuses other than I’m human and normal and just pretty much like everyone else except that maybe a take a few more photos than the average mom.

But I found myself becoming more and more unhappy with the fact that I didn’t have a method for documenting our lives in a way that was working well, in my opinion and it’s been said I’m a bit of a perfectionist at times

When I began to think about what I wanted and compared that to what I was doing….BLECH!  Definitely not a match.   So I knew I needed to change that or this “internal” disgust was just going to grow and grow.  So I set out to  decide what it was I wanted and that’s where the process started to change for me.

It took me some time to figure out

a) what I wanted (and that’s constantly changing, which is ok)

b) how I was going to get there and

c) how to start to work at it slowly in a way that I could keep up with it and stay current, something I certainly wasn’t doing 5 years ago.

More than anything, I LOVE photos.  I hoard them, feel the most happy when shooting pictures of things that make me happy) and that is just who I am, it will never change.  I’m not the best at deleting all the photos that maybe I should, which makes for an even more interesting organizational challenge.  But I found over the past 10 years that if I’m not interacting with my photos in some way, I’m not happy.  However, I am not a fast scrapbooker and I have learned that I like to have projects with consistancy from year to year rather than a range of projects that happen to be what I felt like making on that particular day….know what I mean?   I wanted a system, one that made sense, but was a match to ME and my style of ‘getting it done.”   I wanted projects that allow consistancy and flow from year to year, with basic structure, but yet I also with so many photos, I wanted something that allowed me the ability to utilize a lot of photos in a easy format.  I wanted to be creative yet, not have my creative process slow down my “efficiency” of documenting our lives.

So finding a process that matched my desires has taken me some time to figure out (not that I’m totally there, but I am a heck of a lot closer and on my way) and I’m constantly changing it and adding to it as I’m able to stay current with what I’ve implemented.

Sharing different pieces of this process in the next few weeks here on my blog.

Digital Books:

So a few years back I started making these digital “year in review” books for each of the girls.  Each month is a double page spread, with other special activities, such as birthdays, dance recitals, vacations, Christmas etc getting their own separate page.   I stumbled across this process just by trying it as a Christmas gift and realized quickly how this started to become a key piece in documenting life as it happened.  But more importantly, I loved the process and it was something I could easily keep up with no matter how crazy and intense life became.  I have kept up with this now for 3 years while I’m continuing to add additional pieces to accomplish my “big picture” goals.

I get a lot of questions about how this affects my love for scrapbooking.  What’s interesting is that this part of my process (making yearly digital books) has liberated my time for scrapbooking and my love for the process more than anything ever has before.  I have all my favorite photos for each child archived in a book so if I want to take an afternoon or 2 months to work on an “over the top” creative project about our vacation or any other topic, I am virtually guiltless in doing so.  My creative time can now be just that.

I will share more about my other scrapbooking projects (notice I say other because I consider these books scrapbooking) and how that relates to these books in follow up posts to this topic.

Specifics about these books:

As I said before, I first did these as Christmas gifts and now I do them at the end of the year after Christmas. I start creating the book in December right after New Years for the last month and then print.  I have discovered lots of coupons in January as “post holiday” retailers are working hard to get your business.  So I can find good deals then as well as being able to add in the end of the year to each book.   I have considered starting the books and working on them through the year and then decided that I enjoy it so much at the end of the year looking back, that I didn’t want to change that.  I also like having the perspective of time that helps me see things differently.  Photos and events that at current might not be special to me, later on have more meaning or sometimes less meaning.  I often find that a photo that I thought was less than stellar or lacked much value, 6-8 months later has a lot more impact on me.  Just another thing I love about making these books.

I first order only 1 book, but later on in the year when there are great deals on photo books, I will then order a second one or order any books I need to get duplicates of (the great thing about a digital books is I can order more any time as the copy is kept online until I remove it.)  So the girls have their copy to keep forever and we have ours to keep at home.

For me the process of replaying the year in photos while I’m working on them is as fun to me as anything.  I have done this enough times that I find I’m looking forward to it as soon as we have the last year’s printed. It offers me perspective and makes me enjoy the little things, something as a Mom, I want to do a heck of a lot more than laundry or dishes, right?    So this process is good for me in the scope of being a MOM as well as having a great finished product in the end.

Most of the books I have made,  have between 250 and 300 photos of our favorite photos from the year, specific to that child.  I try to include photos that 5 and 10 years from now will mean something to each one. If I’m unsure, I will ask the girls about the photos while I’m working on their book, which btw, I can do on my laptop on the couch while we’re spending some family time together and they will help me.     I also am working on, notice I say “working on” being in more of our pictures.  As the one behind the camera usually, I might need a support group to change that one, but I’m trying.  I noticed just the other day in McK’s book I actually was in 5 photos on one open page.  Pretty sure that comes close to being a record for me.  One thing I’m always trying to make an effort to be aware of.   Some of our first books didn’t include as many photos of myself, but more of the girls.  But I have changed how I perceive what should go in to these books.   I try to include as many photos of mom & dad, family, etc where I can because I know as the girls look back, they will not want to see every photo of them, but see THE TIMES and  all their favorite people at that time in their life incuded, as hard as that is to put my face in there.  So while these books are about them and they are also about their world and the people in it.

The girls look forward to their books arriving and it’s pretty obvious they love them.  So do their friends. They are stored in a drawer in the living room (you can do this with these because they are so compact, something else I love about them) and when friends come over the books always seem to be out of the drawer (lots of friends make it in the books because they are in a lot of our photos.)   I know when the girls are in High School they will love looking back at who were their best friends and the craziness I managed to catch on film.    If I can keep up with just one system or process, let it be this one because when the girls leave home if they have this one book from every year, I would be happy.

Related yet off topic funny story:  McKinley came home from school the other day and apparently needed something for show and tell.   She got a note in her book bag that it was her day to bring something.  She told me right away and she knew exactly what she wanted to bring.  She said she wanted a picture of “Sissy” on the toilet.”   I have learned with McK that you never know what’s going to come out of her mouth, but even this one, caught me off guard.  Then a few minutes later I realized that in her latest photo book was a photo of her just as she had mentioned.  She was wearing a mask and nightgown, sitting “you know where!”

I believe she has been looking at her BOOK.

When I started making these books, I decided to let go of some of my “issues” I have with perfection, still working on that one too.  But doing so has been part of making this work for me.  I upload every photo I take  (more details on that process to come.)  If a photo happens to be post processed, then great.    But otherwise, I don’t fix photos or alter and apply actions to all the photos I’m using.  If I did, the reality would be that I would never be done with the books.   It’s not about perfection, it’s about making it work.

I include specific information about the month and details that I think will be important 5 years from now on the pages where I can add it in and then we go back to the final book and handwrite in details where we want them.  This is all a part of the final goal of  getting it done and not getting caught up in all the details, which is an important part of making this work for me.

I know there are a lot of different sources for making digital books including snapfish, shutterfly and kodak, evan apple.com but I have done all of my projects with Photo Works.  Nichol introduced me to their services several years ago and I have been hooked ever since.  You can use THIS LINK to sign up, totally free.

I have 100% of my 2007 photos uploaded and archived off site on Photoworks and also on disk, in addition to our at home archiving we do.  It’s all a part of triple protection so that we never lose our photos.   This is another part of the process that has evolved for me as I have experimented and learned.  I now upload my photos throughout the year, month by month.  So by the end of the year, I don’t have to go back and spend the time doing this.  Makes this process work so much smoother AND even better I now have a second set of all my photos archived off site.  This past year that became even better when I discovered I could with the click of a button, have those burned to disk for me and printed in to 1 FAMILY PHOTO LIBRARY book.  More on that book later…

Here are  a few photos I pulled out of last year’s books:

I questioned whether I really wanted to post a link to the girls books for safety reasons, but if you are interested in a web link where you can view our full books interactively page by page, just post a comment here and I will email you the link.

These books are one of the ongoing projects that I have discovered work for me, but along the way I have stumbled across a few other systems and projects, more on those to come:

  • family photo library
  • digital photo library backup
  • personal photo journals for the girls
  • family photo journal
  • other scrapbooking related projects
  • photo related gifts

If you have questions, just comment and I will try to answer those in my follow up post.

 office-2.jpg    office-1.jpg

Spent the day yesterday in my office working on art and getting caught up with my photos.  Since I’m trying to develop a relationship with my new camera, which means just spending a lot of time with it.  I’ve had a lot more photos to keep up with it seems and I can get behind SO EASILY.  Good and not so good.

I always upload my photos and then watch them in a slide show format.  Not sure why, but I guess it’s my way of really enjoying them again and reliving the pieces of our everyday.  That’s probably one of the things we enjoy the most, playing all of our photos in slide show.  Somedays I’ll just let them run all day long and the girls love that.

I’ve been  ”trying”  (the key word is try)  to focus on printing my photos for my personal photo journal, weekly and sometimes daily.  Daily would be ideal, but sometimes it becomes a weekly thing.  It’s been hard to change old habits, but something I’m trying hard to work on.

So yesterday I was printing photos throughout the day on my most prized little “ginger” I call her and loving it.  I have a big wide format printer and yet I use ginger because she’s fast and friendly and it works for my everyday life.  Because of her, I actually get to the creative process a whole lot faster, which is huge for me.  I kept working and printing most of the day, feeling really proud of myself for it.

The girls got home from school and we spent some time tidying up the house.  They both got some new shoes for spring/summer.  They came yesterday so they were each trying them on.  (We are SO lucky when catalog orders fit)  Pretty happy because both girls LOVED their new summer sneaks, so they were wearing them around the house with happy feet, skipping and oozing with energy and excitement.

pink-again.jpg   blue-again.jpg   and then there are even more colors for $12 on closeout here.

It all helped in the fact that they both had their little bags packed because they were heading off to their first “sisters sleepover” at a friend’s house.  Delaney has had several sleepovers and they have both stayed several times at my sisters and parent’s house, also one time they have camped overnight with these friends, but never an “official” sleepover.  Just the “officialness” of it was making McKinley a little anxious, but I knew she would never have glimpse of regret. It was more than obvious how excited they were, which just makes your heart swell too, although I have to admit Mom was also a bit excited  (looking forward to a quiet dinner out with Dad, a nice quiet house and time to get a lot done.)

So I ran upstairs to get my camera and back down to catch a photo of them leaving with their bags and big smiles.  McKinley was screaming when they were coming up the drive she was so beside herself.Well, I realized about 5 minutes AFTER they had pulled out of the drive that my photos I had quickly snapped of them leaving, were going to have to only remain in my mind   ….SINCE…    my card was still up in my printer, from my good day of printing photos. . .  sigh
